Becoming a wig maker
The journey began in the 1960s when Dick Guliker, a pharmacist, crossed paths with his future wife, a talented dressmaker named Tonny. During those times, wigs were an integral part of women’s daily attire. This piqued Dick’s curiosity, leading him to delve deeper into the world of wig-making. With his wife’s support, he honed his skills, striving to craft wigs that not only fit perfectly but also exuded impeccable style. Together, they crafted their own line of wigs, initially selling them from their pharmacy. This marked a transformative shift in Dick’s career, as he transitioned from being a pharmacist to becoming a renowned wigmaker.
A Collaboration with Balmain Paris
Pierre Balmain, a renowned fashion designer, envisioned wigs as the ultimate accessory to complement a woman’s attire. He discussed this concept with his hairstylist, who, by a stroke of fate, attended a hair fair in Paris where they crossed paths with Dick Guliker. Introduced to each other, they forged a partnership and embarked on a journey of wig creation. This collaboration led to the establishment of Balmain Hair in 1974.
